The music industry is changing rapidly. Whereas in the previous years, record labels were the most important company for the success of an upcoming musician, the case is not the same anymore. Many musicians nowadays chose to be independent and do everything by themselves.  Furthermore, advances in digital music distribution, streaming platforms, social media, online marketing tools, and technology are changing the way artists release music to reach their fans. In the modern music industry, it’s becoming easier and easier to build a music career by releasing music without the support of record labels. There are many facts showing that signing a record deal with a major label is no longer the only path to stardom and serious success. As an independent musician, it can be difficult to determine the best path to growth and success. The digital age brings a variety of music services and tools for independent artists. Musicians have access to music distribution, marketing, streaming, merchandising, and other services. The Internet also makes it easier for musicians to reach a new audience. You can now deliver music to digital music stores, music platforms, and streaming services without a record contract. Chance the Rapper is an ideal example of an independent artist who has achieved great success without signing a record label. His 2016 mixtape coloring book won three Grammy Awards, including the Best Lap Album. It was the first Grammy-winning streaming-only album.

Full control of the music

Independent artists have complete control over the direction of their music. That means full control over distribution, marketing, artwork, messaging, deadlines, and more. Moreover, as an independent artist, you are free to make decisions about your creative vision. Whether you’re expressing your opinion, doing a collaboration with different genres, or trying out new sounds, you can do whatever you want. However, if you sign up on a label, the opinions of others are important, and whether you would like it or not you have to agree with them, as they have full control over your music.  The label may ask you to deliver certain vocals in the X  of the track you provide. Control of the revenue

As an independent artist, you get to maintain 100% profit from music sales, streams, license agreements, merchandise, and other revenue streams. However, if you sign to a record label, all the hands involved (such as marketing, distribution, etc. ) will get a part of the pie. In other words, your music may be less profitable, as everyone will get a piece of your revenue. 

Ownership of your music

Independent artists own the right to master their music. You also have the freedom to negotiate music licenses and publishing contracts. A common element of a record contract is signing away your rights to your music. In short, labels can help you determine who will benefit from your music and how it will be used. 

Digital independence

You no longer need major labels so you can distribute your new single it can be done simply by using streaming platforms.  Digital distribution and reproduction technologies can be incredibly powerful. Streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Soundcloud offer fairer copyright models that offer benefits for emerging and mid-career artists. 

HOWEVER….

On the other side, funding mastering, distribution, marketing, merchandise, touring, and other expenses are costly. Furthermore, many independent artists don`t have the resources and money a record label can provide. Additionally, when talking about licensing and publishing deals record labels have experience with securing those deals. Moreover, they can get you to play shows at major venues and festivals, and give you massive media coverage, radio, and other opportunities. The main advantage of signing with labels is their network. Without labels, network reach and a larger audience can be limited. Established labels will have a larger fan base. They have different contacts with booking agencies, music venues, publishers, public relations firms, and other music industry professionals whereas if you are an independent artist, you will need a lot of years and experience to get those contacts.

Should you be independent or signed with a record company? Both sides have their strengths and weaknesses. Independent artists, get to keep all their profits and have full creative control. Artists who want more freedom to work on their music, less profit, and more exposure may consider signing with a record label. However, your resources, as well as your network of music professionals may be more limited. It`s clear that record labels still have a lot to offer to emerge and established artists. They may no longer be the gatekeepers of distribution and promotion, but they have the experience, resources, and connections that are crucial to big success. So if you want to keep the full creative freedom we would advise you to stay independent but if you want to go global, maybe you should consider signing with a record label for bigger chances.
